2018 was a big year for Friskney WI, not only were we 100 years young but we also had several special events to mark the year.
March 2018 : LNFWI Meeting
March 2018 : LNFWI Meeting
Eight WIs celebrate their centenary this year and their presidents were presented with certificates by guest speaker Philippa Langley at the annual meeting at the Embassy Theatre in March. As you can see from this photograph Sally Hall, our longest serving member, was also invited to the meeting and presentation. Our certificate is now on permanent display in the Village Hall. |
April 2018 : WI Fashion Show
We started off the year with a fashion show in the village hall, open not only to WI members but all comers and come in they did !
The show was an amazing success with a packed hall and models from our own ladies and several volunteers from the village.
June 2018 : Friskney Village Show
Our next major event was the annual Friskney Village show, this time with an overall "Rural" theme. As usual we had our WI stand and several of our members entered into the Show competitions with Pauline winning the overall Show Cup and being the major influence behind our WI entrant into the "Best Scarecrow" competition. (which we won !!!)

As you can see from the slideshow we had plenty going on and as well as our stall we had a flower display in the church, well done Frances !
And as always our thanks go to those ladies (and partners) who came along to help on the day, both setting up and taking down. Our thanks to everyone.

July 2018 : The Centenary Jamboree
After months of planning and posters all over the village, the day of the Jamboree finally arrived and our ladies turned out in force to help and make the day enjoyable for all comers.
After months of planning and posters all over the village, the day of the Jamboree finally arrived and our ladies turned out in force to help and make the day enjoyable for all comers.
The day started well with glorious sunshine and lots of volunteers milling about as first Revolutions Leisure arrived with van loads of inflatables followed by the County Lincs bus to provide music and commentary during the day.
Friskney Baby & Toddler group were busy at work setting out toys and areas for the younger children, trying to pick somewhere with a bit of shade ! Next to arrive was the local fire brigade, not on call but to display how a fire engine works to the children. (both small and not so small !) While the bouncy castles and rides were going up Hannah and Chris were busy stoking up their barbeque and getting hot food ready for the adults - those pulled pork rolls are to die for..... And inside the Village Hall our ladies were preparing jellies, ice cream and cakes which were given free to all the children coming to the event. Finally all was ready and the event opened by the Skegness Town Crier and the Nytewalkers launched into their first set of the day. After their first set we had organised games for the children, "Pass the Parcel" and "Musical Chairs" being probably the noisiest. Not to be left out we also had a version for the grown ups even if some were a bit reluctant to take a seat at first ! |

In the end the day proved to be just too hot for the inflatables and they had to be taken down before the day finished. The event was closed by Pete Fox of the Nytewalkers who played a brilliant second set with amazing energy in the hot sunshine.
Our thanks to those on the County Lincs bus, Friskney Baby & Toddler Group, the Nytewalkers, our local fire service, Tony Jarvis and our drone pilots for taking photographs of the event and last but not least to all the ladies of the WI who turned out to make the day memorable.

October : All Change at Friskney WI
Friskney WI members are sad to bid farewell to our president, Margaret Parker, who has steered our local branch for the last 3 years and been a regular member since 2012.
Margaret is leaving the area to move back to Derbyshire and will be sorely missed in the village.
During her time as president she has taken our members into the internet age by creating this website and starting up a Facebook page for our members.
Margaret also wrote and produced a monthly newsletter for our members as well as being an inspiration for many of our events such as the Fashion Show attended by both WI members and the local village.
In a more serious vein she organised LIVES to come to our monthly meeting in order to demonstrate how to operate the defibrillator equipment that our village keeps outside the Anchor Inn.

Sad as we are to see Margaret go, we're also very happy to announce that she's being succeeded by Pauline Kirkham, a long time member and well known in our group. Pauline is famous for her baking skills (cheese scones in particular), boundless enthusiasm for "theme" decorations at events and probably most recently for flooding the village fairs with LED bottle lights. Even to this day she still claims not to have emptied all of the wine bottles herself.... |
October : WI Jumble Sale
As usual our October jumble sale was well attended by crowds of bargain hunters who bought lots of items and then finished off with either one of our lovely cream teas or the delicious bacon baps we had on sale from the kitchen.
Thanks to all our members who came along to help and support us on the day, and a special vote of thanks to our guest Chef, Graham, who kept those bacon baps coming !

November : Christmas Craft Fair
On the 18th November we took a stall at the annual Christmas Craft Fair, organised by the Village Hall committee and held in Friskney Village Hall. We had our usual display of home baking, jams and preserves and had a very successful day with little remaining on our stall for anyone arriving after mid-day.
Our thanks as always to those who baked and provided the goods for our stall and you'll be pleased to hear that we raised over £100 from the event.
