Annual Meeting 2014
The annual meeting of Friskney WI took place on Tuesday March 11th. We were joined by our WI advisor, Norma Booth, who oversaw the procedure of electing a president for 2014.
Sally Hall, our long-serving president, informed members that she would not be seeking re-election this year. She was thanked by members for doing such a wonderful job. Sally told us that she could now spend more time doing her housework!
Sally's retirement led to a new president being elected from the current WI committee.
We are pleased to announce the election of Heather Austin asFriskney's new President. Heather has served as president in the past and we look forward to her taking up the reins again throughout 2014 and beyond.

This month's meeting was led by our new president, Heather Austin, who welcomed all members and guests. It was quite a squash as we were relegated to the small committee room whilst the hall was being decorated. Heather welcomed our two newest members, Pauline H and Gloria.
Our guest speakers this month were Mr & Mrs Tony Spencer who gave a talk on Marzipan modelling illustrated with several trays of their models.

All members thoroughly enjoyed the marzipan modelling and were like rabbits from a trap when Mr & Mrs Spencer said that we could purchase the models to take home with us!

Heather opened our May meeting with the sad news that our good friend, Margaret Motson had passed away. Members paid their respects with a minute's silence. Margaret was a long-standing member of Friskney WI and will be sadly missed.

We were joined this month by speakers Serina and Julie, who encouraged us to 'Take a Scrap of Fabric' and recycle it, thus creating lots of things both decorative and useful. We were shown how to make bunting in the shape of various animals, fruit and flowers, rather than the usual triangular variety, as well as birthday cards, bookmarks and chickens to name but a few. |

This month's meeting welcomed Steven Hyde, who gave a very informative talk about the work of the volunteers at L.I.V.E.S. Stephen gave us an insight into the work they do.
We learnt that LIVES Medics & First Responders are all volunteers who give up their time to respond to emergencies in your area. When you dial 999 not only will an ambulance be mobilised, but at the same time, the LIVES volunteers on call in your area will also receive notification that you need their help. |
The limited road networks surrounding the more isolated parts of Lincolnshire mean that many parts of this county often need to wait longer than others for an ambulance to arrive.
These extra minutes are vital to a patient. In extreme circumstances this could mean the difference between life and death.
The LIVES volunteers were present at the Annual Meeting at the Embassy in March, and while we chatted to them, we were very surprised to learn that the volunteers do not even get a petrol allowance, and that the organisation relies on donations from the public.
A very worthy cause.

Alpaca farming was the talk for this evening, presented by our guest speaker, Chrissy Kirk from Homefield Alpacas. Sadly, Chrissy wasn't able to bring one of her alpacas with her, (Elf & Safety issues!) but we did learn a lot about her work on the farm, saw some of her flock (? right terminology?) in photographs and felt some of the softest of wools they produce. We are visiting the alpaca farm on our August coach outing, and we are certainly looking forward to it. Here you can see our Gwen Hicks admiring the wares exhibited by our speaker Chrissy Kirk |
